For towed watersports you want a 50N buoyancy aid (EN ISO 12402-5): it floats you while leaving your shoulders free to hold a handle, paddle back to the board and climb the ladder. Higher-buoyancy jackets are bulky and dangerous at speed.

Nylon - the boat-crew workhorse

How a vest should fit
- Snug with all straps/zips closed - a helper should not be able to pull it past your ears when lifting at the shoulders.
- Kids' vests are sized by body weight, not age - check the label and never buy "room to grow".
- Replace any vest with torn straps, crushed foam or sun-bleached fabric - flotation degrades.

What does 50N mean?
50 Newtons of minimum buoyancy - roughly 5 kg of lift. Enough to keep a conscious adult afloat while staying slim enough to ride in.
Can I use an impact vest?
Impact vests without an EN ISO rating are not certified flotation. If it doesn't carry EN ISO 12402-5 or higher, treat it as padding, not a life vest.
